Class Eight
Mini-Lecture on papers: (5-10 mins)
Final draft due Tuesday
Issues:
- Consistent Tense
- Run-on sentences and comma splices – lots of these. I gave some leeway, but marked down when it consistently impeded understanding
- Cultural Categories
Tense:
I am sitting on the boat watched a submarine knocks over a cruise ship. Holy cow!
Run on:
My uncle left us standing there with the dead deer while he went back to the truck to get a bag of chips and when he came back and offered me the chips I turned him down.
Comma Splice:
The last time I saw Aunt Jody was also the last time I saw my million dollar parrot, most people are pretty sure she stole Dr. Polly Tweetment from me. However, I like to think that their simultaneous disappearance was totally coincidental.
Cultural Categories:
1.5 pages explaining how the event can be related to ONE OR TWO specific cultural categories.
Ended with a good conclusion that reminded the reader of the important points made in the document.
What did the good papers do? They defined the category, and then went into good specific detail about how the even shows the category.
How did it turn out?
I strongly recommend the writing center to all of you, and especially to those of you with grades below a B. We need to catch these issues now, not later.

Let’s begin today with an exercise in tense: Past, Present, and Future. You are to go through your draft and look for any and all errors in tense. I have marked some, but not all. We need to be consistent in our tense, or our writing will be very difficult for readers to understand. (10 mins)
Next, I want you to identify five poorly written sentences in your paper, write them down on a blank sheet of paper, and hand them to a group mate to correct. (5-10)
Revisit the assignment:
…
Your completed paper must be between 3 and 5 pages in length and tell a cultural story that reflects a real experience that illustrates an understanding of one or more cultural categories (or a combination). Similarly, there must be clear evidence that you understand the basic notion of culture, how culture is composed of discrete parts and how those parts affect real life experiences.
Your paper should not be a mere cultural report and it should you should attempt to withhold all judgments, both positive and negative, as much as possible.
Format: Your paper will need to be typed and double-spaced. You will need to use a reasonable font size (12) and a reasonable font style (Times New Roman).
In-class jounral work (15-20 mins)
We need to be revisiting our cultural categories. I want you all to expand on what you currently have by selecting one of the categories you have not considered yet. Go into good detail about how this category is represented in your cultural story:
The categories are:
The Major Categories:
- Kinship
The Category of Kinship relates to the ordering of families. It can be, but does not need to be, biological.
- Materials
The Category of Materials relates to the bare minimum “things” that a culture needs to sustain itself and its identity.
- Values
The Category of Values relates to the basic rationales a culture uses to justify its actions to itself and to other cultures.
- Social structure
The Category of Social Structure relates to the kinds and types of relationships that define communal interactions.
- Sustenance
The Category of Sustenance relates to the kinds of foods that a culture uses to sustain itself.
- Subsistence
The Category of Subsistence relates to the basic practices followed by members of community to ensure their survival.
Discussion of the reading.
Homework:
Revise final draft for Tuesday. Finish reading and annotating Ancient Futures.
